President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo has signed Presidential Regulation Number 28 of 2021 concerning the National Cyber and Crypto Agency on 13 April 2021. The issuance of the Presidential Regulation was based on the need to organize the agency in the context of realizing national cyber security, protection and sovereignty as well as increasing the national economic growth. This regulation was issued To optimize the implementation of duties and functions in the field of cyber and encryption security, a more effective and efficient BSSN organization is needed.
BSSN is a government institution that is under the authority and directly responsible to the President. The Organization and Work Procedures of BSSN are then regulated in BSSN Regulation Number 6 of 2021 concerning the BSSN Organization and Work Procedures.
The foundation of National Cyber and Crypto Agency is not separated from two preceding agencies, National Crypto Agency (Lemsaneg) and the Directorate of Information Security, Directorate General of Informatics Applications, Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) as regulated in Perpes Number 53 of 2017 regarding the BSSN which was further refined by Presidential Regulation No. 133 of 2017.
The BSSN now handles all duties and functions in the field of encryption at Lemsaneg, as well as information security, securing the use of internet protocol-based telecommunications networks, and security of the existing telecommunications network and infrastructure at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics.
